The date and why it is a national day
Thailand celebrates วันพ่อ (wan pho), Father's Day, on 5 December. The date is the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX, who was born on 5 December 1927 and died in 2016. Many Thais saw him as the father of the nation, which is how a royal birthday became the day for all fathers. It is also National Day, and a public holiday. In 2026, 5 December falls on a Saturday.
The same logic applies to Mother's Day, which sits on a queen's birthday. Read the Mother's Day guide for the comparison.
Yellow, Monday and the canna
Thai custom assigns a colour to each day of the week. King Bhumibol was born on a Monday, and Monday's colour is yellow. Many people wear yellow at the start of each week, and around 5 December the whole country leans into it, with elaborate light displays near Ratchadamnoen Avenue and the Grand Palace area. Ceremonies are typically held at Sanam Luang.
The flower of the day matches. The canna, ดอกพุทธรักษา (dok phuttha raksa), is a yellow flower whose Thai name is translated as a Buddha who protects. The Nation reports that it was chosen because yellow is the king's birthday colour, and the name makes it an auspicious pick. It has many regional names, and parts of the plant are used in traditional medicine and food, but you do not need that detail to order it.
What to send
Thais show respect to fathers and grandfathers by giving them canna. Yellow flowers in general carry the message, so a bouquet built around yellow blooms is a reasonable option when canna is hard to find. Ask the florist:
- Whether canna is available in your recipient's area.
- What yellow flowers they recommend as a substitute.
- Whether a small card can be attached to the arrangement.
Do not promise a specific flower to your father or father-in-law. State your preference, and let the florist tell you what is realistic. Our etiquette guide covers the wider rules on meaning.
A quieter occasion than Mother's Day
Father's Day is less about school ceremonies with garlands and more about family time. Hotels and restaurants offer special dining, and many families spend the day together. That affects delivery. Plan for where your father will actually be: at home, at a family restaurant or at a hotel hosting a lunch. Ask a relative.
If the recipient lives in a condo, read flowers to hotels and condos in Thailand. As 5 December is a public holiday, do not send a surprise to an office that may be closed.
Remembrance
The day also has a solemn side. The late king is honoured through ceremonies, and for some people the occasion is as much about remembrance as about their own fathers. A warm card is right for a father. Keep jokes about the monarchy out of it.
If the father is no longer alive
Some people mark the day for a father who has died. Funeral conventions are a separate subject, and our guide to funeral flowers and wreaths explains what suits a funeral, so that you do not send one for a remembrance day by mistake.
The card
Short and respectful works. The card guide has wording, and if you add สุขสันต์วันพ่อ (suk san wan pho, happy Father's Day), ask a Thai speaker to check it.
Planning the order step by step
The date is fixed, which helps. Work backwards from 5 December and treat the days before it as the real deadline, because the holiday itself may leave offices, condo desks and even some family homes unattended.
- Weeks before. Ask a relative where your father or father-in-law will be on the day. A family lunch at a restaurant or hotel changes the address completely.
- Days before. Agree with the florist what yellow flowers are on offer where he lives, and whether canna is among them. Ask what they will substitute if it is not available, and approve the substitute in writing.
- The day itself. Warn the recipient that a delivery is coming, so someone is ready to take the flowers and the courier is not left waiting at a gate.
If the timing is tight, an earlier delivery is perfectly fine. A bouquet that arrives the day before can still stand on the table when the family sits down.
Writing it the Thai way
Thai families respect seniority, so address your father-in-law or an older relative with the title he uses, not just his first name. A line that thanks him for something specific carries more weight than a general greeting. If you speak little Thai, write in English and let the family translate it at the table. That is usually welcome, and it gives the card a role in the day.
Wishing someone สุขสันต์วันพ่อ is simple enough, but check the spelling with a Thai speaker before you print it on a card. A misspelled Thai phrase on a gift is remembered longer than the gift.
